Papertoy MonstersPapertoy Monsters contains 50 models to make with ten blank templates to design your own. The designers of these papertoys are apparently some of the most highly regarded designers of papertoys in the world. The designs indeed do seem to be very impressive, with monster names such as Lobo, Horgue , Zumolla , Evil Icy and Squidbeak being amongst my children’s favourites.   

Each monster is contained in a sheet/page of A4 thick paper. The monster is made up by popping it out and sticking together the tabs with glue or tape. This required a level of dexterity and indeed the book says it is for nine years old plus.  

Each monster has accompanying assembly instructions and an explanation of their strengths, weakness and why you might fear them. The explanations are quite often funny and endearing. Most of the monsters are not really scary, so this would also be fine for younger, more  sensitive children (who would need help to assemble them )!  

Papertoy Monsters proved to be a great hit during a visit to a family member at half term who is very low on 21st century technology (she has a TV with 5 channels).  The iPod touch was limited (no wifi) and the DS was restricted after a while. Out came the Papertoy Monster book and both my nine year old son and 13 year old daughter were engaged for a number of hours over the few days of our visit. The only small concern is what do we do with them now? They proved a little flimsy on the journey home (inadvertently ended up near the bottom of a bag) and I think these sort of things are notorious dust traps when displayed on shelves.  My plan is on a wet Sunday afternoon that we gather them together and make them into mobiles to hang from bedroom ceilings or under high beds.

We’ve still plenty to make and I plan to turn them into a party game at my sons tenth birthday in a few months' time.

Highly recommended!  I would rate Papertoy Monsters 4.5 out of 5.
